BMW does not rule out producing a hydrogen-powered electric car

The German company BMW is currently developing a new platform called New Class, to support a group of new electric cars starting in 2025, and according to some sources, BMW does not rule out that its upcoming electric cars will work with hydrogen.

Speaking to the media, Jürgen Goldner, General Manager of the BMW Hydrogen Programme, said: “We are working on being able to integrate hydrogen into the New Class platform, perhaps only in large cars. We haven't finished the project yet, but this is a possibility."

Building a new platform with hydrogen in mind from the start could make things a lot easier for BMW, even if it doesn't use that option in the near future, because modifying an existing platform to support hydrogen would be more expensive and more difficult to implement.

For his part, the General Manager of the BMW Hydrogen Program stated that his team is looking for a smart packaging solution to increase the safety and flexibility of using this technology.

“The iX5's tank system is very large, and it's right in the middle of the car,” says Jürgen Goldner. The idea is to put smaller tanks next to each other so that they take up the space of the battery pack, with smaller cylindrical tanks we will maintain flexibility, and the rest of the infrastructure is already in the car, such as the engine.”

Mr. Goldner is clearly very optimistic about this new technology from BMW, "It's the most exciting project I've worked on in my 25 years at BMW, and I've done some great things in the past," he said in a statement.

It is worth noting that the news about BMW's reliance on hydrogen fuel technology is not new, as it was reported last August that there was cooperation between the German company and Japanese Toyota to help it manufacture hydrogen-powered cars.

The German company also revealed the iX5 model that runs on hydrogen fuel in 2021, and if you want to know the difference between hydrogen cars and electric cars, we recommend that you watch this video.
